Yes, you do seem to have a problem with alcohol. You also sound incredibly self-centered, high-maintainence, and crazy. If the fat doesn't scare men away, getting to know the real you will for sure.

hi amanda,

well, goodness. i was rather surprised to get this comment, but felt the need (in my crazy way) to respond.

first of all, the alcohol is what it is. i make no excuses and have no need for any.

as for self-centeredness, i would have to say i probably am. especially here, on my blog, where my intention is and has been to write about me and my life. at least i can say (likely with your approval) that i have been consistent in achieving that goal.

crazy and fat? hmm. these terms are certainly subjective. i like to think of them on a sliding scale, really. for my own part, i feel being self-aware (on both counts) is key. and is also why writing about them is funny.

however, i cannot abide by being called high-maintenance. i have no idea where or how you would get this idea. was it the mashed potatos on my shirt? my breezily elegant soup-eating? my fear of wearing heels because of how often i trip and fall? or was it more the emotional? like taking it to heart when a stranger on the bus smiles at me?

in the end, i just have to wonder why you would feel compelled to make this comment. pointing out all of the things i'm most concerned with and insecure about seems fairly base and pointless.

(unless your intention was simply to hurt my feelings...in which case i feel i should let you know that you have succeeded. well done you.)

  1. Aww... Don't listen to her. What a mean thing to say.

I don't understand. With all the things on the internet to read, if someone doesn't enjoy reading something, just move along. It's one thing to disagree with someone and start a discussion. It's a completely different thing to write something just to be hurtful.

    *hugs*

  2. I agree- what a mean thing to say! I love your blog and can totally relate to it. Not to mention it gives me something funny to read everyday!! :)

  4. Amanda is probably just an angry pissed off teenage boy diguised as a woman. Don't listen to "it".

Do what I do when I have a bad day or someone says something mean and nasty...go home, have a glass of wine and do some drunk knitting!

  5. Kristy-

Don't let Amanda get you down! I LOVE you! I found your site through your Best Of post on Craigslist (the fireman one) and have been an ADDICT ever since. I've passed your link onto friends and family and now we all chat about you as if you're family (sad but true!! :)). You are HYSTERICAL and entirely relatable!

    Boo Amanda! Boooooooooo!

  11. Keep up the good work Kristy - my life would not be the same without you because 1-what would I do when I am bored at work? 2-you inspired me to start my own weight-loss plan. 3-you bring new light into a sometimes dark and drab, dreary and weary world. Don't stop!

  14. I think we should all print up "SCREW AMANDA-or is it ANDY?" on a t-shirt, mail them out (I live in Florida so this might take a while), and march to Andy's (oops, freudian slip...Amanda...right) front door and hang him up by the balls..oh, right, he is a she (perhaps having sexual orientation issues). No woman would write those stupid things. It is also apparent that Amanda (Andy) lives a small town pea-brained life and doesn't get it. I drink...I drink wine. Lots of wine. Screw you Amanda (Andy) if you think drinking the "devil's brew" is bad. So is taking your issues out on the innocent. Go away, Amanda/Andy (Amandy?). Vive la Kristy!!!

  15. Amanda sucks. What a hurtful you-know-what. We love you, don't take the criticism personally.

  17. Sorry, but she's just a witch. Did anything constructive come from her comment at all? Or did she just reveal herself to be self-centered and evil...hurting you just for the sake of hurting you. She is self centered because she had to call attention to her judgments instead of just moving along. Whatever.

Maybe it's a good time to remind yourself that writing is a risk...it takes courage to reveal all of the personal things you reveal. It's clear from the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of the responses to your posts that most of us are at the least entertained by you, and, at best, are grateful to feel a little less isolated when we feel those same feelings you discuss. Please don't let the naysayers get you down. It's a reflection on them, not you.

I've been lurking here for awhile...I'm a 43 y.o. single mom in the SF Bay Area too. I've shared your blog with all my friends because I think it has great value and you are a great writer.

As a very wise friend once said to me "Sometimes in life, you just gotta hit "delete". Next time don't even bother posting such pettiness, just know that most of us are on your side eagerly awaiting the next installment of your experiences.

"If the fat doesn't scare men away, getting to know the real you will for sure"? Ouch...sorta takes away the classic retort: "Oh, yeah? Well, you're ugly and I'm on a diet!" I notice that she hasn't linked to her own blog...she's an angry soul without the courage to create her own outlet. Sad.

You, on the other hand, are smart, funny, pretty and (apparently) sane. A good combination!

  20. While I was writing my post, leigh came in and took all the words right out of my mouth.

You're famous! Sometimes people won't like you! An ABSOLUTELY HUGE MAJORITY DOES!

People like that literally aren't worth listening to, or reading. Personally, I DO think Amanda is a woman. She could be any weight, and in fact is probably skinny and hating every minute of her life because food is ALL SHE THINKS about (note to Amanda: you're totally obsessed, darling) and follows The Rules and reads InStyle religiously because she has no sense of fashion or taste and has a house decorated straight from The Pottery Barn.

And can't believe that a WOMAN would LIVE HER OWN LIFE. And CELEBRATE it.

Note to Amanda, again: please get on anti-depressants, heavy ones, and move on to the vapid smile phase of your life.

  21. seems as though amanda lashed out at you like that because she feels threatened. maybe amanda wants to write chick lit, and is jealous that her blog hasn't developed a following like yours (because her stories don't include the wine she won't drink and bus hotties she doesn't attract). maybe she's a little snobby/judgmental, and can't figure out why people aren't clamoring all over themselves to be her friend (imaginary internet or real life) like we do to be yours. no matter--don't let her insecurities become yours. you're the best!

  33. screw Amanda. the internet is full of trolls who do nothing to contribute to the conversation, but just like to say spiteful things to deflate others that appear happy and excited about something.

the thing is, we like to read your blog because we like reading about *you*. i mean, you wouldn't write a blog about someone else, and if all that's going on in your life is a fun weekend with a bit of wine, you still find a way to share it with us and make us laugh and feel like we were there. and we can relate.

i have to admit i'm a bit too thin-skinned to deal with the internet. i used to post on the food forum on craigslist as a registered user, and had to quit because i had trolls that would say mean things just because i posted. on the FOOD FORUM. i was also not in the "in" group of registered users and my posts were constantly critiqued, even though i'm a professional in the food/wine biz.

the internet is a mean place where everyone can be anonymous and everyone's opinion is validated just because they can type. hang in there. don't let em get you down.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I used to always think that the commercialization of the Internet was one of the worst things that ever happened. I mean have you visited the Rant and Rave section of Craigslist? It filled with racist remarks, followed by the bashing of every statement, no matter how innocent. To think, one can hide behind a monitor and spew such venom. To make matter worth, these people are often timid people who wouldn’t dare to speak a quarter of what they thought in the presence of others. So basically, closeted bigots who love to criticize with out a spine..

    ReplyDelete
  35. Console yourself with this question, sweetness:

What must the life of poor Amanda be like, that she feels compelled to lash out at an unknown person for what they write in their online journal?

A soul in need of pity and emapathy, for sure.

Hey, Amanda, here's a thought for you: Start your own blog, all about you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Some people are just pissed off because they can't tell funny stories, so they turn mean. I think there's a lot of "Pay it forward," making comments. And then a blogger named Patrice I know also talks about the reverse-pay-it-forward, when people wander around the blogosphere and are rude and mean and bitchy.

I happen to love your blog and check it daily (and sometimes more than that, depending on how the day is going). You and Crazy Aunt Purl got me knitting again, which led me to a real yarn store, which was beautiful, and now I do things like knit iPod cozies. And I am happier than I was before doing such things. So extrapolating that out...your blog has made me happier than I was before I started reading it. Just knowing that there are other single girls in my age group out there that aren't quite sure yet what life is all about makes things much easier for me.

  40. A little comment regarding the Amandas of the world. As someone who has done email based customer service for an online company, I've come to the conclusion that the only thing keeping a goodly number of this country's population civil is the fear of getting smacked in the mouth. The anonymous nature of the good ol' internets removes the likelyhood of that happening, thereby opening the floodgates to let their nasty, spitefull personalities spill forth with no fear of reprisal. It's infuriating, but it's also really sad because anyone who feels it's okay to spew such bile and hatred to a total stranger is probably miserably unhappy with their own life. They're always going to be out there, don't let them get you down. Instead focus on the multitudes (myself included) who check in every day for a good laugh and to have their day made a little brighter by your breezy elegance.

    ReplyDelete
  41. And me to the chorus please!

You actually inspired me to buy knitting needles and some really strange carrot colored yarn. I look at it sitting there and think of you often! One day I may even introduce the needles to the yarn.. but first don't i get to shop for like a yarn bag and like knitting accessories and stuff? I am sure there must be another step before picking up the yarn. I bought a book and everything...

oh dear. look at me. I've been self-centered. Please excuse me, it was the last day of school and I am having a drink. ;)

  42. K-

Quite obviously you are loved by many, many imaginary internet friends (and yes we ARE real)! The ones who don't adore you just don't know what they're missing.

Thanks for inviting us into your thoughts and life through your breezily elegant blog.... ;-)

And as you've said... embrace your lushiness. I, of course, will join in the wine celebration tonight in your honor!

  43. Add me to the long list of people who discovered you through craigslist! I've been spreading the love; in the past 2 weeks, I've gotten at least half a dozen other people hooked on your blog. We all think you're lovely.
Plus, just to jump on Amanda's little snark-train for a minute: she should run her unwarranted vitriol through spell-check. While she misspelled "maintenance," I was pleased (and not at all surprised) to notice that in your response, you did not.
We love you - and your mad spelling skillz!

    ReplyDelete
  44. anonymous,

  47. I think it's interesting she hasn't posted again.

I think you're giving her the attention she wanted by addressing her comment. Think about it, Kristy; if she'd really thought those things, why would she still be reading? Let alone posting?

You're very cute and perfectly functional. I wish you would date my male friends. Um, except for that one, he's mine. K thanks.

  48. Got here a bit late today. WOW! Talk about a fandom. K, you've got quite the following and I am proud to be one of them. I may not be a lushknitter but what about a lushcrocheter? I haven't been able to master two needles yet. (Sad, no?)

Amanda is a sad, pathetic, sorry excuse for a human. I too believe that Amanda is a girl, someone who is very jealous of your fame, and yes girl, you are famous. I, like so many others, have gotten quite a few friends hooked on your blog. Thank God for your snarky hilarity...you get me through the day.

And if Amanda would like to step outside, I'm about to go Medieval on her ass! *could someone hold my drink?*

  50. Kristy-
I'm not one to resort to violence. But I will totally kick her ass! That is the most awful and contrary thing someone could have said. I hope Amanda feels like the small, petty person she is after reading all of these comments about her. Time to wake up and smell the roses, Amanda, sweetie. You have no friends and Kristy has thousands... Does that tell you anything?

    ReplyDelete
  51. Kristy - forget Amanda. She's obviously so insecure about herself that she has to resort to insulting someone who is so obviously fabulous that they have 50+ people commenting on their blog on a daily basis.

  58. Gosh Kristy,
The "A" is hateful. You are an inspiration. You are a sweet, talented, beautiful, intelligent and funny woman. And to think I found you cuz I'm addicted to knitting and I thought that you may have perfected the "art of knitting while walking". Thence the name of your blog. (Okay, I'm a little slow.) Your blog is refreshing and insightful and I read you everyday. You don't deserve the mean comments. I would so drink wine with you if I didn't live so far away, SW MO--ew. But I will buy wine and toast to you and your successes and funny stories. I love you and so does my sister.

To Amanda--go away, we don't want to hear from you again!!!
